OT ASSESSMENT and TREATMENT process and how it all works..
I have over ten years experience in private Occupational Therapy practice, with special interest in Sensory Integration. My practice charges Discovery Health Medical Aid rates, but I ask clients to settle directly with the practice and claim back from their Medical Aid.
School contact and or visit
Before commencing the assessment, a school visit is often performed. This is done before the assessment so the child behaves naturally when being observed. The school visit provides me with information on how the child is coping from a sensory perspective within the multi-sensory environment, and is a great opportunity to make contact and liaise with the class teacher.

Initial Assessments
Younger clients under the age of three undergo a Toddler Assessment. This assessment is often play based, and results are obtained through objective play assessment and multi-sensory exploration.

Children over the age of three undergo a Comprehensive Assessment of overall functioning. This assessment uses various standardised assessment tools to thoroughly evaluate all areas of the child's development, for their age and grade level.

Parent feedback and report
In the parent feedback session, attended by both parents, the results of the OT Assessment are discussed. Goals and aims for short and long term therapy are decided upon, in order to focus on what is most important for each client and their family.
Thereafter, the Assessment Report will be emailed, often accompanied by a home program of strengthening ideas, and a sensory diet for home and school, if necessary.

Therapy sessions
Therapy sessions differ in time, depending on the child's age, and the aims needing to be focused on during therapy. These are discussed with parents in the feedback meeting. It is recommended that therapy is consistent, even during holiday breaks if necessary, to help them make pleasing progress.
